This folk art carved man's head is made of what I believe is walnut and it dates from the mid to late 19th century. The carving is made in the image of a sailor of the era, wearing a hat and neck scarf and may have in fact been a portrait of a friend or relative. The carving was very well executed and it has a beautiful deep surface patina. The back side of the figure is flat, made to be hung on a wall, but he displays equally well sitting on a shelf.
